12yo Beth lives a traditional Mennonite lifestyle in 1980's Canada with her family and is content except for her great desire to study art. Unexpected excitement arrives in the form of Paula, a big city attorney intent on getting the family's cooperation with a million-dollar case involving their cookie recipe passed down for generations. Beth is faced with a choice of cooperating with Paula--against her family's wishes--or staying the traditional course.
I love cookies and had high hopes for this novel based on a true story. Unfortunately, the story lacked a clear focus and thus was not as good as it could have been. The individual characters are interesting but the author doesn't develop any of them beyond face value. And even the usual arc of a story was not clearly laid out. I think the youngest chapter book readers who might not care as much about a well thought out story can still appreciate this book for its interesting setting and fun premise, but its not a book I would highly recommend.
