Saturday at the Food Pantry by Diane O’Neill and Brizida Magro - ADVISABLE

Saturday at the Food Pantry by Diane O’Neill, illustrated by Brizida Magro.
PICTURE BOOK. Albert Whitman, 2021. $17. 9780807572368

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

When Molly’s mom tells her they are going to the food pantry the next day, Moly doesn’t understand why her mom looks so sad. Even when she sees her school friend, Caitlin, in line, Caitlin also looks embarrassed to be there. Molly’s mom has always told her that everyone needs some kind of help sometime, so why is everyone around her look so sad?

I love Molly’s of message of dignity in realizing that you need some help. As a teacher you should be sensitive to your audience if you read it aloud – you never know what secrets your students are keeping.
