Wizard is a dog with two lives - an ordinary life running, playing, and rooting through the trash - and his life as a show dog. 

DeLange’s book is translated from Dutch - I don’t know if the problem of the stilted language is from the original text or part of the translation.  Either way, Wizard’s story lacks some element of charm that would help it appeal to an American reader.
