Binna is still learning English, having moved to America from Korea. WHen she brings a Korean treat, dalgoni, to school to share, her words get all mixed up and her fellow students treat her like she’s a baby. That night at home, Binni regroups.
I like how Kim-McCarthy represents how speaking and hearing English can feel to a new learner. I’m rating it optional because it is quite wordy and sometimes confusing. It is a good book for non-English speakers to read to feel seen and for English natives to glimpse the struggles of someone else. I don’t understand why the girl is living with her older sister, not a parent.
