Sri Lankan soldier Ranatunge Karunananda has always wanted to be an athlete. When he grew up, he became Sri Lanka's fastest runner. His country sent him to the 1964 Summer Olympics in Japan. He was running the 10, 000 meter race. It was a dream come true. He had to run 25 laps, but on lap 17, the other runners were so far ahead that he couldn't see them any more. By lap Twenty-one, the leaders had passed him and crossed the finish line. He feels intense pressure to stop running. Should he just quit?
Crossing the Finish Line inspires each of us to have courage and perseverance, and to stay steadfast in the race for our dreams amid hardships and other people's objections. Joshi's colorful and well done illustrations transport us into Karu's quest.
