Beverely is so eager to have someone to entertain is his big, old house. When a family of humans moves in, he gets right to work to settle them in, feed them, and entertain them. After they run away screaming (except for the littlest girl), Beverley wonders if he will find anyone who will appreciate his caretaking.
Not every reader will appreciate Beverley’s attempts to please the humans - but it is a silly way to be grossed out. And have fun talking about the ways that people’s expectations differ from the bat’s. What I don’t understand is why is a bat named Beverley also gendered as male? Considering how girls are under-represented in picture books - even as animal characters, it would have been an easy call to make.
