Ellen grew up in wide open spaces, helping her parents around their farm and roam the fields, instilling her with a deep love of nature. First schooled on the farm, then at Vassar WOmen’s COllege, Ellen continued on as the first female admitted to MIT - though the first year was rough, as none of the professors wanted her in class. After she proved her worth , however, she was tasked in 1872 with testing the water around Boston to root out the sources of and kinds of pollution that were killing the citizens.
Ellen had many more accomplishments that are acknowledged in the picture book. She even coined the word ecology to explain the science she had created. I particularly found it interesting that she founded the American Home Economics Association to teach women about healthier homes - Home Ec certainly has a different reputation in the present day. Classes that talk about scientists, women’s firsts, pollution, or chemistry could all hold Ellen up as an example. I’m not sure i would take the time needed to read this aloud in whole, but I would share parts and have it available as a free time read.
