Odder is separated from her mother at a very young age, but rescued and taken to an aquarium, where she is taught most of the things an otter needs to know before she is released. In the ocean she learns more skills from other otters. One day she is badly injured and must remain at the aquarium, where she eventually embraces her role of otter pup surrogate mom.
Applegate has blended several otters’ stories for Odder. The back matter is very interesting, The story text is pretty long - if reading aloud, you might want to break this up.
