BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ADVISABLE

APPEALS TO: SOME

Born in 1818, Lucy Stone had to struggle for every word of education she received - her father let her study, but refused to pay for any of her books. While she was admitted to college, women were not allowed to speak in classes, debate, nor read their own speeches. Whenever Lucy could, she spoke up about the wrongs done to women - helping to form the American Equal RIghts Association with Susan B. Anthony.

Many women today seem to have forgotten that women in America couldn’t have a credit card in their own name until 1974.  Kirkfield gives us a timely reminder of why and how women have fought, and why they still need to fight,  for their voices to be heard. I always enjoy Gibbon’s breezy illustrative style - she has illustrated several biographical picture books about women recently.
