When the class runs outside to play, a few children are scattered around, not knowing how to join in because of their various fears or problems. As playtime ends, each of them gets invited to join in, but the kids want a better way to know that someone wants to join in. Thus the Buddy Bench is born.

It sounds like the Buddy Bench is catching on in school yards around the US and the states.  The back matter includes info about its origins and the basic rules for how the bench works. If you read this to kids, however, they will want to build a bench - so be prepared. It is kind of a one time classroom read.
