Ruurs begins with teaching basic map skills and the rest is a colorful, fact-filled cultural study. You'll read about communities with as few as 80 people and as many 21,542,000. You'll read about kids who live in a village where all the buildings float, kids who sometimes can't go to school because there's been a hippo sighting and kids who live in a long, tall apartment building that takes up an entire city block.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the different communities featured in this book, and learning about they typical ways kids spend their days in different cultures and countries. I liked that most of the locations featured were a little less well-known. The maps were easy to understand and fun to study. One of my favorite things about this book was that the author included some information in the back matter about her research process, including fact-checking and using trustworthy sources. This book won't appeal to all kids, but upper elementary students interested in different cultures and countries will definitely enjoy this one!
Because this book features global citizens, a wide variety of skin tone, ethnicities are shown. I also noticed differently abled characters using wheelchairs, service dogs and mobility canes on many of the illustrated pages.
