Booker the Library Bat by Jess M. Brallier and Jeff Harter - ADVISABLE

Booker the Library Bat by Jess M. Brallier, illustrated by Jeff Harter
. PICTURE BOOK. Pixel & Ink, 2022. $18. 9781645950462

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

It’s Booker’s first night as a library bat – eating the bugs before they can eat the pages. While he’s worried that he will measure up to the other bats, he listens carefully to their tales. When Booker spies a thief among the books, he uses the knowledge of the other’s stories and their help in order to thwart the villain.

At first I thought Braillier’s portrayal of each bat was over-the-top stereotypes – but Brallier was clever and used those stereotypes to aide Booker. Harter’s illustrations are a little flat and cartoonish, but the story’s charm almost makes up for that.
