BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
It’s Booker’s first night as a library bat – eating the bugs before they can eat the pages. While he’s worried that he will measure up to the other bats, he listens carefully to their tales. When Booker spies a thief among the books, he uses the knowledge of the other’s stories and their help in order to thwart the villain.
At first I thought Braillier’s portrayal of each bat was over-the-top stereotypes – but Brallier was clever and used those stereotypes to aide Booker. Harter’s illustrations are a little flat and cartoonish, but the story’s charm almost makes up for that.
