AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Junior is a little gorilla living in 1933 New York City. His cousin is the famous gorilla, King Kong. Junior, with his cat, Bernice, watches King Kong perform amazing feats of strength and courage while wondering if he will ever measure up.
Mark Teague uses a gray-scale color scheme reminiscent of the original King Kong movie set in 1933. It creates a nostalgic feeling for those familiar with the reference. Then, in the illustrations of King Kong performing his feats, Junior and Bernice are shown gazing wistfully on from the distance. Teague captures that feeling of admiring someone and envying them at the same time. A nice story about wanting to grow up to be like our heroes.
