AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Pokko is a little frog. When her parents gave her a drum, they quickly realized that it was very noisy. Too noisy in fact for their little house inside a quiet mushroom, so they tell her to go outside to play her drum, but not to make too much noise, so that she doesn't draw too much attention to the family. But with the forest so quiet, Pokko starts softly playing her drum, but then she is joined by other animals playing instruments and eventually it turns into quite a noisy crowd of animals. Just what Father Frog feared.
Forsythe's story is a little dark and rather humorous. The watercolor, gouache and colored pencil illustrations are expressive and funny, the text simple and clever. I think it will be loved by both parents and children - oh the folly of making mistakes - and do we ever learn from them?
