Growing up in a crowded, but loving, apartment in 1950’s Northern California, Sylvia just knew that her feet had to move, and her body needed to twirl and spin like the ballerina she saw on tv. Because they had such little money, SYlvia taught herself from books she found in the local bookmobile. It wasn’t until a Russian instructor saw her that Sylvia was allowed into a ballet studio - studios and ballet was only for white girls, of course.
What an inspiration for any young ballet dancer, but especially those still fighting the good fight to be allowed into historically white-centric spaces! I love that the authors give us a concrete example of Sylvia believing in herself, not just a vague celebration of Blackness.
