10yo Fred (Fredericka) lives in Alaska - far away from large cities. So far that school teachers do not last long in their village with just a one-room school. In November of 1948, Sam, the pilot, brings a new teacher. He promises that she will be strict. Her name is Miss Agnes. To the delight of the children, she takes a real interest in them and their lives. She teaches them to read and write in innovative and new ways. Mis Agnes even pays special attention to Fred's deaf sister, Bokko.
A great story about the impact one teacher can have in the lives of children. Miss Agnes taught them to read and write. She showed them the world through microscopes, worlds that were so much smaller than them. Then she talked about the universe and things that were so much bigger than them. She opened their eyes to so many new things and showed them that there is so much to the world, outside of their little village. She loved the students and they in turn loved her. It was a great year for Fred, and for Bokko. This is a "must read." It was a fast and easy read and would be a great read-aloud.
