BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: SOME

A young polar bear is separated from his mother when his ice home breaks away and floats out to sea.  His home is almost completely melted by the time he gets to land where there are many ships and humans.  He looks for help, but none of the busy people hurrying about notice him.  Finally, a little girl offers him ice cream.  Many children get together and decide to send him home on an iceberg made of something very special.

Gharehbaghi's simple story about a young polar bear is actually a symbol of hope for the future.  The adults rushing around are too busy to deal with polar bears losing their habitat, and it is up to the children to care for and come up with their own solutions to save the animals on our planet.  I enjoyed the engaging watercolor illustrations.
