Chester
Pierce grew up and developed many talents and skills in music and sports, which
earned him a spot at Harvard where he played football. In 1947, Jim Crow laws were still in place in
the south, so when Harvard went to play a football game against the University
of Virginia, Chester was met with opposition.
Chester kept his head up and his team had his back, so although Harvard
lost against UVA, Chester felt they had won a more important fight for
humanity.
Chester Pierce’s story is
inspirational and made me want to cheer for his courage and his teams' support. The story is concise with great
illustrations that kept my son’s attention.
The only trouble might be that younger readers will need terms such as
Jim Crow and Mason-Dixon line explained to them, but at the back of the book
the author includes facts and information about Pierce and these terms. The book is based on a true story, but the author has made up some dialogue and situations which he explains in his author's note.
Reviewer, C. Peterson.
