Mazie has a disability as a result of having cancer. When she starts school wearing a scarf to cover her baldness and an eyepatch over her eye socket, her classmates don't talk to her. They do, however, talk to each other and speculate about the reason Mazie wears the scarf and patch. Mazie never loses hope that she'll make friends and she knows she just has to be brave and share her story.
I love Mazeika’s bright beautiful illustrations and the simple, bold way she tells Mazie's story. There's a lovely author's note at the end of the book, as well as a list of suggested things we can do to be supportive of people with disabilities. She said "Curiosity, with kindness, should always be allowed." Wonderful lesson and fantastic read aloud in a classroom or library.
Background characters are represented with different skin tones and ethnicities.
