This is a simple story focused on consent and respecting boundaries, written in a way that makes the concept easy for young children to understand. A child invited to a friend's birthday party expects everyone to welcome her hugs of greeting, celebration and birthday wishes. She quickly learns that hugs are not actually for everybody, and that are lots of other ways to say "Hello!", "Hooray!" and "Happy birthday to you" without hugs.
The illustrations are super appealing with a beautiful color palette and lots of easy to identify action on the page. The book is more lesson than story, but kids will find fun on the pages and they'll easily understand the idea of asking permission and respecting boundaries shared at a kid-friendly level.
The cast of characters are illustrated as diverse in race, ethnicity and ability.
