The Faith of Elijah Cummings by Carole Boston Weatherford and Laura Freeman - ADVISABLE

The Faith of Elijah Cummings: the North Star of Equal Justice by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Laura Freeman
. PICTURE BOOK BIOGRAPHY. Random House, 2022. $18. 9780593306505

BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Elijah’s family took their family of seven children and left their living as Black sharecroppers to move North to what they hoped would be better lives. From the first time Elijah participated in integrating a local pool, he knew that he had to stand -up against injustice. Even when some around him told him he would never succeed, others believed in him, and he believed in himself – rising all the way to serve many years in the U.S. Congress.

Elijah Cummings is an important role model, so I welcome Weatherford’s PB bio of him. However – Weatherford’s passion doesn’t shine through like it has in earlier subjects, which makes me sad. I love the details of Cummings story and think he will be an inspiration for children.
