Mary grew up on a family farm, but once she started school at 8, she absorbed knowledge. In 1940, after high school, she took herself to college to learn chemistry. Even though she never graduated, she worked first in labs, and then landed a coveted job at North American Aviation, where she became involved in the space program, creating the first stable rocket fuel.

Mary’s story covers so many different aspects of life for a woman around the 1940’s. Kids today will find lots to talk about.
