BUYING ADVISORY: EL – ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: SEVERAL
A young girl describes the events of her Juneteenth holiday. There is a parade, a family gathering, good food, time spent honoring ancestors, and fun.
I have a limited understanding of Juneteenth. Tripplett’s book helped me better understand why we have the holiday and how it is celebrated. It would be a great book to read to children around the holiday. At the end of the book, there is a short description of the importance of red in Juneteenth celebrations and a short bibliography. O’Brien’s illustrations are bright, bold, and detailed.
The majority of the people in the illustrations are black.
