Sadiq Wants to Stitch by Mamta Nainy and Niloufer Wadia - ESSENTIAL

Sadiq Wants to Stitch
by Mamta Nainy and Niloufer Wadia,
PICTURE BOOK Karadi Tales Company, 2019. $14. 9788193388914

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Young Sadiq is responsible for caring for the family's sheep. His mother is a beautiful stitcher, and helps support them by selling her handmade items. Sadiq would love to stitch, too, but his mother, who has taught him to embroider, reminds Sadiq that her job is the needlework and his is the sheep (as his father has died). In their community, stitching is women's work. However, when his mother is concerned that she won't be able to finish an order in time, Sadiq secretly works on it once his mother is asleep.

Oh! What a beautiful story! Follow your dreams Sadiq! Our world is quickly losing these exquisite handmade items as the makers age and the younger generation chooses other skills to learn. I loved the message that boys can do beautiful work, too.
