A male and female Canadian geese become attracted to each other and from then on spend all their time together They raise their babies together. Since they have mated for life, they return year after year to the same nesting spot. Tragically, the male becomes ill and dies. The female stays by the body and does not migrate with the rest. The next spring, in her loneliness, she looks for other geese who are also alone as she tries to find a new companion.
The prose in this book feels stilted when read. The story would have been better served if the facts about life partners had been woven smoothly into the narrative. Many of the notes at the end of the book seem redundant and could have been added to the storyline. Anne Hunter's illustrations magnificently portray these majestic animals.
