When the crops are destroyed again, Junior's family moves from the country to the city, where his dad can get a more stable job. But things are different. Junior has to wear shoes and watch for traffic and make new friends. His friends introduce him to the Library in the Woods. In the 1950s in Mississippi, black kids couldn't get library cards, so this community made a special library just for them. Junior was amazed!
A nice author's note gives the reader more information, including the fact that Junior is the author's brother. A lovely tribute to the African American Library in Roxboro, Mississippi. I liked how Junior was more interested in reading than playing with friends, and how he helped bring literacy to his family. A nice selection for a reader looking for something different about Civil Rights. The characters are African American
