Shortly after being elected President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln traveled by train from Springfield to Washington D.C. One of the cities he would pass through was Baltimore, the only southern city on his route. The Pinkertons discovered a plot to kill Lincoln there. There's wasn't much time to foil the plans of the assassins, so they needed to use their best man - who was a woman. Kate Warne - she was classy, smart and a great detective. Kate could protect the President.

I loved the story - the telling was exciting and quickly paced. Comport's illustration look right out of the time period, as though originally printed on newsprint. And, there is so much back material! There's an afterword, some biographical info about Kate Warne, information on Lincoln and Slavery, the Railroads, and (my favorite) a description of the kind of clothes Kate would have worn to disguise herself. Also includes a bibliography of primary and secondary sources.
