A family of dragons loves to spend time together going on adventures. But the mama dragon is an astronaut and she has to leave the family behind while she goes on a mission to space. The family finds ways to stay close while she is away.
Told in rhyme, this is a sweet story that would be good for children who are separated from their parents for a time. Menon was a crew member on Polaris Dawn and the story grew out of her own experiences being away from her children while on a mission. Harkless’s illustrations are amazing. They appear to be made from clay with wonderful color and texture.

A snapping turtle named Fire Chief is very lucky because he was one of the few turtles to hatch and survive to adulthood. He was also lucky to choose to live in a pond near a fire station. Every fall, Fire Chief crawled out of his pond, crossed the road, and spent the winter burrowed in mud in a larger pond. One fall, Fire Chief was hit by a car while crossing. The firemen found him and wanted to help him. Could they find anyone around who knew how to help a snapping turtle?
Montgomery tells a warmhearted true story about a turtle and the conservationists who helped give him a second chance. I liked reading the extra information in the back matter. Patterson's realistic illustrations are expressive, detailed, and beautiful.

Jax (12yo) didn’t make the basketball team, Luke (12yo) didn’t make it into the musical, and if Miley (12yo) doesn’t make friends, then her parents will cut her from public school and homeschool Miley with her eye-rolling cousin. These middle schoolers are not friends, but now they each have reasons to need each other—if everyone is willing to be all in.
At first, it’s difficult for these characters to see where they could fit together, and the beauty is that their diverse team is then not confined to any one teammate’s home court. They bring together everyone’s strengths and support each other’s dreams—even when giving support means getting out of their comfort zones. I also love that Miley’s chapters are told through her notes and stick figure doodles.
Most of the characters are implied White, and Luke’s family comes from Estonians that moved to America. Also, there are a couple of characters that are described as Black or as having “dark brown” skin.

I really like this series of books. I read All About Nothing which I thought was fascinating. I really enjoyed the cut paper illustrations. It makes the illustrations so striking and captivating. I also really liked the simplicity of the story. Patterns are more than a print you choose to wear, there can also be a pattern to how we organize our day. Jaden is a young Black boy who wants to paint a mural in his neighborhood to celebrate different kinds of love he sees around him in his family, school, and community. He works with lots of different people to come together and paint the mural in honor of Black Love Day, an African-centered alternative to Valentine's Day on February 13th.
I will say the title is a little misleading as the majority of the book focuses on different types of love in Jaden’s Black community, rather than joy. However, he does have the idea to paint the love mural as a way to bring joy in everyone’s lives, so it kind of comes together in the end. I was excited to see a picture book with a broad range of Black characters and the positive and affirming message of the book.

Even though I don’t have kids, I still enjoyed the story and I particularly loved the illustrations. Inky the octopus has lived an playful, yet quiet life in a tank in a New Zealand aquarium. One night his lid is left open just enough that he can squish through and escape!
While based on Inky’s true story - Hanson attributes lots of thoughts to Inky that are no way verifiable. Share this with a class and look up octopus escapes on youtube - lots of them to enjoy! Written in rhyme, which did not bother me at all, for once. I didn’t even notice until halfway through.

The girl and her rhino are going on vacation , but she has her hands full keeping him under control.
Rhino’s antics are delightful fun - silly, outrageous, impossible. But the rhyme scheme doesn’t always work and as I tried to read it out loud, I found myself starting and stopping to figure it all out. I would have to practice this several times before presenting out loud. Kids will enjoy looking at it, though.

Trim was a young ship's cat who thought he knew all about life at sea. One day, a storm was brewing. Trim feels afraid. All his animal and human friends are doing new things. Penny the dog and jack the parrot explain why they do all these new things like batten down the hatches. Trim feels better when he knows the ways to prepare for a storm. As he is taking cover, he finds a new frightened albatross friend. Can these new friends help each other ride out the storm?
Trim Sails the Storm is historical fiction about Trim the cat that actually sailed with Captain Mathew Flinders in 1799. The story is very interesting as we all learn how to be helpful, and ride out a storm on a ship at sea.
