BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Harriet loved hats, especially befeathered ones - so elegant! But, upon reading an article about the millions of birds who died for those feathers, Harriet was angry and ready to make a change. So, Harriet and her cousin stopped wearing feathers and came up with a plan. They invited all their society friends to a tea party, and after hearing Harriet's concerns, they also pledged to stop wearing hats with feathers. They had more tea parties, handed out leaflets, and before long 900 Boston women also agreed to boycott feathered hats. Time to organize, Harriet started the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
I can't get enough of these short picture book biographies! The story of the founding of the Audubon Society was delightful! I had no idea it was started by women as a response to feathered hats. Galotta's illustrations are great, I loved the turn-of-the-century fashions and all the lovely hats. Includes back matter about bird watching, and how to be a conservationist. Harriet and her cousin Minna are white.
