How Can I Wait When There's a Treat on My Plate? by Dan Graham, illustrated by Teresa Martinez. PICTURE BOOK. Magination Press, 2021. $17. 9781433832260.
BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - ESSENTIALAUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Twin brothers Dell and Pete have a lot in common, but one brother is much better than the other at delaying gratification when it comes to treats. After Pete misses out on the after-game ice cream treat multiple times--because he opts to have a treat earlier in the day--he asks Dell for tips on how to wait. Dell gives Pete a number of suggestions and after practicing, Pete learns the important life lesson of delayed gratification.
This book is put out by the American Psychological Association and they have included a long note in the back referencing the research of teaching delayed gratification to kids. I liked the bright illustrations and rhyming text to even introduce this topic with kids and I think its a good fit for libraries at school and home.
