A young girl named Yuki is picked up from school by her brother who she thinks doesn't like her because she has a terrible temper. While they walk home from school, Yuki throws the house keys down a manhole. Her brother Shen is far ahead and doesn't notice. Yuki decides to climb down the manhole and get the keys. She climbs down into a surreal world where she meets the Mud Princess and other "yucky" beings. As she traverses this thick world of mud, she learns to navigate her emotions. Who ultimately saves her and brings her home?
Her Muddy Majesty of Muck is interesting as it relates emotions like anger and frustration into tangible images. Alemagna's illustrations are deep, dark, unique, and successfully represent negative feelings.
