What happens at a baseball game? This sturdy, interactive board book will take you through the excitement of the crowd, the action on the field, and the love of the game.  Readers can run their fingers over the raised red stitching of a baseball, feel the smooth, cool wood of the bat, and tough the rough, pebbled surface of a fielder's glove.

The sensory actions help toddlers connect words to physical objects.  Kwon’s illustrations are bright and intentionally simple.  This is a great first sports book.  By letting kids touch the game, the book turns a complex professional sport into something intimate and manageable. This is the perfect gift for any baseball loving family.

One blustery day, the wind blows a cloud over Tansy's head, blocking the sun.  She does everything she can think of to get rid of it, but it stays. Her dad, best friend, and teacher try to help, but it won't budge.  Then the cloud begins to rain on Tansy and she forgets what sunshine feels like.  She finally decides to put on rainboots and carry an umbrella.  She looks for things like flowers that need rain.  What if the raincloud never goes away?

The Cloud That Stuck uses Tansy's persistent cloud as a metaphor for mental health challenges. Krossing's text encourages readers to find ways to live with problems rather than to get rid of them,  highlighting self-acceptance.  Leung's gentle illustrations show the light and dark emotions of mental issues.

The Future Book is filled with funny, visionary, and ridiculous social customs of the future.  I also liked the colorful, creative illustrations.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Follow along with two of our nameless White protagonists as they explore the Kashmir region of the Himalayan mountains. Reminiscent of the classic picture book, Goodnight Moon, each page bids a fond farewell to the sights and features of this unique locale at the base of the Himalayan mountain range.

This is a gorgeously illustrated picture book that pays homage to the rich and diverse landscape in the Kashmir region. I loved the little blurbs on each page that gave more context for the featured element like the bulbuls (birds), or the shikaras (boats). It was a fun way to learn a lot about this region. I will say it’s missing some context as the authors don’t really address the disputed claims to the territory by generalizing the area simply as “Kashmir”. But that won’t matter much to the casual reader. I think it would be a great addition to a world culture shelf in your library.

Jerome and his rescue dog Ekko are walking the city on the hunt for words. However, when Jerome only finds sad, angry or depressing words, he decides to decorate a tree in the park with his positive word collection and invites his friends and community to participate.

I didn’t really like this picture book. I got what the author was trying to do, but the overall message fell flat for me. I had hoped for more exploration of word choice or diving deep into the joy of language, but the book came off as trite and superficial. I just think there are more ways to create positive change, and share the power of words, than to decorate a bare tree in a park.

Sign and Rhyme: Hey Diddle Diddle is a brilliant "two-for-one" experience that turns a classic nursery rhyme into a hands-on learning session. Annie Kubler’s illustrations are already iconic for their warmth, but the addition of American Sign Language (ASL) by Annie Kubler and Sarah Finan (who provided the signs) makes this board book truly stand out. Instead of toddlers just listening, they can "act out" the story. The clear sign diagrams for words like "cow," "moon," and "cat" are placed right alongside the text, making it easy to learn the signs in real-time without being an expert. The babies in the book are diverse and joyful, which is a hallmark of the Child's Play series. It’s permanently attached to the back cover, so you never have to worry about losing it during playtime.

A fantastic pick for parents looking to combine story time with sensory play. It’s particularly timely given the current "axolotl craze" and makes for a heartwarming gift for baby showers or Valentine's Day. Stilwell gives us a highly charming and practical idea for a young child's birthday. The "gift-and-card in one" concept is brilliant for simplifying shopping and providing something more lasting than a paper card. Cummins reimagines a classic nursery rhyme for the most bedtime-resistant of little ""lambs"". The book cleverly adapts the familiar ""Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"" melody into a narrative about a high-energy sheep who absolutely refuses to go to sleep. Illustrated by Pete Oswald, the book features the same expressive, fluffy character from the popular Sleepy Sheepy series. The visual wit—like Sheepy’s wide-awake eyes compared to his parents' heavy-lidded exhaustion—adds a layer of humor for parents.

If you have a toddler who struggles with bedtime, this book is a must-have. It’s perfect for fans of Sandra Boynton or Eric Carle, offering a fun ""sing-aloud"" quality that makes the repetitive bedtime battle feel more like a shared joke between parent and child. Proverbs are sweet and fun. Letícia Moreno’s illustrations are a highlight, using rich reds and soft pinks to radiate heat and familial connection. The inclusion of symbols like the Sankofa bird and golden ""sparkling trails"" for food scents adds a magical, immersive quality to the pages. Mühle perfectly captures the intense, often illogical emotional world of young children. If you’ve ever witnessed a group of toddlers try to decide who gets to be the "boss," this book will feel like a documentary. The illustrations are joyous and expressive, making it a great springboard into conversations about collaboration for kids aged 4 to 7. I loved that Cowley reminds us that our biggest emotions don't make us bad; they just make us human. It’s the kind of book I wish I’d had on my shelf during those days when my own "tigers" felt a little too loud for the living room. This is a unique story with a surprising ending!

The narrator notices that the boy and girl are reading very serious books. He gives them some pointers on how to look even more serious as they are reading their serious books.

Messier and Collier add a nice little bit at the end to surprise the reader in a delightful way. I would love reading this with a 2nd or 3rd grade group and have them practice along with the narrator’s tips.

Marwan celebrates the friendship between Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, as Gauguin helped Van Gogh find color and joy in his painting.

As a celebration of friendship and support, it is a nice book. I wouldn’t say that it is something so important that I need it, though.

Making a jelly sandwich is so simple!  Especially if you follow the steps outlined here - from disguising yourself as a duck to training your hamster to ride a unicycle.  What could be simpler?

Burach has such a funny view on life.  I am always delighted by his offerings. And I love that at the end of the book he invites the reader to use their imagination for making their own jelly sandwich.

How did macaroni and cheese become the yummy partnership we know today?

Benner and Hawkins give us a humor filled look at a great partnership.  Full of puns, which I am not sure most kids will get, but the adults who read this aloud to them will snort as they go along. It is quite a funny tale.

Barbed Wire Between Us by Mia WenJen and Violeta Encarnacion. PICTURE BOOK. Red Comet Press, 2026. $20. 9781636551920

The stories of two little girls separated by decades, both of whom are incarcerated by barbed wire.

WenJen and Encarnacion share the story of Fort Sill, Oklahoma - site of Japanese imprisonment during WWII and immigrant child imprisonment in 2014 - using reverso poetry and a stark color palette. In communities affected by recent detainments, the book could be helpful for children still processing.  I see the most value in secondary schools as a way to foster conversation about immigration - especially as the backmatter talks about the Japanese experience and the lies told by the US government.

This bilingual ABC book poetically teaches the gods, myths, words, and culture of the Aztecs. In the style of a codex, with a poem in both English and Spanish, colorful illustrations help represent each concept.

I liked that there is a pronunciation of the word on the same page spread, in addition to the pronunciations and etymology provided in the appendix. This would be a fun addition to a class studying the Aztecs.

Phil and Lily are headed off to Grandma's house for a three day visit.  Since this is the first time they have slept over, Lily is a little worried that she will miss everything that is familiar to her.

Flowers illustrations are nice and bright. This might sound weird or picky, but I thought the text type face and the illustrated words were a bit too big - I felt like I was being shouted at and they occult so much space on the page. But my pickiness besides, the Rosenthal’s do a great job expressing some of the nervous feelings that might come from a  first sleepover - even at Grandma’s.

What do jellyfish eat?  Where do they live?  Is it true that jellyfish don't have brains?  Do some of them glow in the dark? Get these questions and more answered when  you read The Secrets of the Jellies.

With realistic illustrations and short but catchy rhyming phrases this book will appeal to young readers.  It would be a great read aloud in the classroom to teach facts about jellyfish in a fun and engaging way.   However, this story does not have much of a plot and is more of an informational book.

Can a ghost be an imaginary friend?  Leo is a kind ghost who loves to draw and make snacks.  When he is kicked out of his house,  he finds a girl named Jane who thinks that he is her imaginary friend.  Will Leo save the day when a thief breaks into Jane's house?

I enjoyed the message of this book.  We should try to notice and appreciate everyone.  The illustrations are a little rudimentary but that adds to the charm of the book.  The only colors you will find in the illustrations are blue, black and white.  This adds to the ghostly feel in the book.

When the Earth was new, you could not walk on it because of the molten lava coming from volcanoes. Comets would crash into it. Then, when the Earth's surface cooled, water vapor rose, and rain descended, creating mighty oceans. Life began in the water. Dinosaurs came and went. What remained are versions of animals we can see today. Humans are a small spec in the vast history of our planet.

Gladstone chose to tell a quick, sweeping story of the earth's history that a young child could understand. The illustrations echo the simple story that was intended. The illustrations will attract a young reader with their bright, vivid colors.

A young black girl, Olivia, is upset when her white friend, Alison, can't come to her neighborhood Block Party because Alison’s mother says it isn’t safe. At home, Olivia’s neighbor, Ms. Effie, explains the history of redlining, a secret practice historically used by banks to deny funding loans to people of color.

Hawthorne gives us a succinct, honest look at the practice of redlining, a proven historical practice that kept people of color out of “good, white” neighborhoods. This is the first picture book that I can remember tackling the issue. Though Hawthorne has written a picture book, I am not sure that elementary students are the right audience - I would proudly show this to any middle school or high school teacher who touches on the subject in any way.

Abdulrahman, meaning "servant of God", grew up as the prince of the Fulbe people in Fouta Djallon in Africa. His community followed Mohammed and the Quran. As prince, his father sent him away to school at the University of Sankore at the age of 12. He came home and learned to be a warrior. His tribe befriended an Irish man and he learned to speak English.  He was captured and became one of the millions of slaves sold in America. He worked tirelessly to return to Africa with his family.

What a joy to learn about this Muslim man and his return to Africa! The miracle of meeting the befriended Irishman in America and his helping the prince astounds me. Senzai tells this story with passion for her people. The illustrations keep the reader riveted to the story.
