Hamilton by Frank Keating and Mike Wimmer - ADVISABLE
Beautiful paintings highlight this lovely biography. Told in 1st person as though Hamilton is writing his own story, each full page illustration is set beside Hamilton's 'letter" talking about that part of his life. A really nice introduction to this founding father.

There is wildlife all around you, from earthworms to birds and butterflies to skunks. You probably don't notice them because you see them every day.
Each entry has a delightful poem and the cutest illustrations. I loved the lady bug poem, with the sweet illustration of just the ladybug, and then another illustration of a lady bug fighting the aphids on a plant. The bees the slugs the birds and the spiders, oh readers are going to want to read and re-read the fun poems as they enjoy this terrific book! A must have for the elementary classroom, especially if they are studying insects or gardens.

Jose is a garbageman in Bogota. Each night, as he collects garbage from the upper class houses, he looks through to find books. He brings the books home and reads them. But on Saturday, he opens his home to the children of his barrio.
Jose Gutierrez is an inspiration - turning something he loves (reading) into something that helps his whole community. Sprinkled with Spanish words and phrases, the context was clear so no glossary was needed. Includes author's note, a list of the books that were mentioned in the story and some online sources.

Cat Kid: Comic Club by Dav Pilkey - ESSENTIAL
Cat Kid: Comic Club by Dav Pilkey, 173 pages. GRAPHIC NOVEL Scholastic, 2020. $13. Content: Language: G: Mature Content: G; Violence: G.
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL – ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Cat Kid gathers up tadpoles and starts a Cat Kid comic club with the tadpoles. The club members talk about making comics and how a good comic strip comes to be. Good ideas are given about how to make comics. There is some frustration among the club members as their personalities clash, but they learn to work through it by making comics.
I like the fun humor and inspiring ideas for people who might like to make comics. I love drawing comics and this book helped me think of more ideas for my own story lines. The drawings make me laugh uncontrollably and there is potty humor, but there is a good moral to the story about getting along.

Manjhi Moves a Mountain by Nancy Churnin - ADVISIBLE
Manjhi Moves a Mountain by Nancy Churnin, illustrated by Danny Popovici. PICTURE BOOK. Creston Books, 2017. $18.
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL – ADVISIBLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Manjhi lives in a village where there is poverty and strife. On the other side of the mountain is a village that prospers. Manjhi is determined to find a way to unite the villages even if it means moving a mountain.
The fact that this is based on a true story will elevate interest level and overcome average writing. The story would benefit from being read aloud with whole class discussions bringing more information about Manjhi’s story and also the themes of perseverance and determination. The illustrations are beautiful and compliment the story well.
